Becasse, Pitt St, Sydney – Closed

June 11th, 2010

Becasse's modern french menu is based on locally sourced seasonal produce which makes for fantastic vegan food - you will certainly find it hard to find a better tasting plate of vegetables anywhere.

Becasse has sadly closed.

The small touches are what made it a perfect night out, having a well rounded dessert prepared just for us or the emulsified block of herbed olive oil to go with the bread instead of butter. I think we have all been to a nice restaurant as a vegan or vegetarian and ended up with two side dishes on one plate as a main course and it is a good experience to get meals of the same calibre as everyone else. We will definitely be going back to try the degustation menu.

Vegan status: let them know you are vegan when you book. We got a call on the day to find out whether we wanted an al acarte or degustation menu and what they were thinking of putting together for us.

Price range: $30 for entrees and desserts, $50 for mains, $120 for a degustation menu.

Restaurant style: Stylish formal restaurant (complete with crystal chandeliers and sculptures)

Recommendations: As the menu is seasonal it will have probably changed but we had: olive and tomato salsa on semolina crackers, autumn vegetable salad, noodle salad, vegetable risotto, fruit salad with mint and a plate of sorbet with quince and fresh fruit. It was all truly amazing, but particulary the risotto with tiny melt in your mouth baby parsnips, carrots and brussel sprouts and the incredible mandarin sorbet.
